Your home needs painting, and you’re thinking, “How hard can it be? I’ve got a ladder. Maybe I’ll do it myself.”

Before you head off to the paint store, there are a couple of things to consider:

HOW EASY IS IT?

Preparing the surface for painting is key. Lack of proper prep will result in a bad paint job. You need to remove things too: light fixtures, flower-boxes, mailboxes, house numbers and decorations, shutters, etc.

Also, selecting the best paint can be complicated, requiring knowledge of the many options available on the market today. And you need to know how much paint you will use. Buy too little and you’re making extra trips to the store. Buy too much, and you’re trying to return the extra paint, which can be tricky.

Then there are the tools required to get the job done so that the end result is a smooth finish and splatter-free windows. Visit the paintbrush aisle in any hardware store and you’ll be astonished at the selection. Nylon/polyester blend bristles or natural? Or sponge brushes that you throw away after use? Extra-fuzzy rollers or the short nap ones? Or what about a spray gun—wouldn’t that make the painting go fast? Don’t forget the drop cloths!

HOW SAFE IS IT?

Painting can be dangerous work. According to OSHA, falls are the leading cause of death in construction and almost a third of those deaths are from workers falling off ladders. If that happens to professionals, then you’ve got to ask—how safe is ladder work for the general public?

In addition, houses built before 1978 might have been painted with lead-based paint. Scraping and sanding lead-based paint (while prepping surfaces for new paint) can have serious effects on your health.

The crew at Original Richard knows how to prepare your house for painting and can get the job done efficiently, safely, and professionally. They know the right paint to use, how much of it they’ll need, and they have the right tools for the job. And when the painting is done, they know how to handle the hazardous wastes that are left over.
